Fine Art Portfolio-Playroom Mural for the Cox Family, Watauga, Texas

Complete Mural as of August 15, 2002

This is a complete view of the mural in perspective. The painting is located in a children's playroom and features several fairies in an idealized meadow. I've played a little with true proportions and perspective for the benefit of my very young audience (ages 1-8). This simplified approach allows me to have make the details larger than they would actually be for easy viewing on little eyes. My young audience is also the reason that most of the visual interest is located in the bottom half of the painting.

(This is a mock up using several photographs of the actual painting.)

Computer Mock Up of Mural

I've generated a mock up of the complete mural for better visualization of the mural as a whole. It spans a back (approx. 11'x7') and side wall (approx. 17'x7').

Detailed Close Ups

I'm presenting some of the smaller details of the final painting here so that you can get a better look.

Tree in progress

You can see from the large picture above that the tree is very close to being finished (mural as of July 30, 2002). I've spent the most time on it because it is the focal point of the entire mural. I've rooted it in the grassy area and started to add grassy over and around the roots (fig. 2). I've added a dirt path to the left of the tree (fig. 3). I still have to finish the bark and leaves on the upper part of the tree (fig. 4). Final details might include a child/fairy sitting on the lowest branch on the right side of the tree (fig. 1).

Stream in progress

I wanted to put in a flowing stream. My process for this is to paint in the stream bed, glaze with blue paint and then reinstate some of the features that I want above the surface. To finish the stream, I will still need to add water movements and reflections.

My youngest client

My youngest client to date in my career is very fascinated with the mural so far. I hope she understands that it's okay for me to paint on the walls but not her or her big brother!

The initial block in of base colors

I blocked in the basic shapes of the tree, sky and ground. Note that most of the visual interest is below four feet to meet the perspective of this mural's young audience.

Prep for background painting

I first had to tape off the molding, ceiling and side walls that weren't being painted. I also taped down plastic drop cloths so that they wouldn't move when I walked across them. (The red cast that you see on the walls is the reflected light from my car sitting in the driveway. )
